Asphalt shingles are on most Ontario homes, but metal roofs are more and more common, especially in the country. Here's how they compare.
Cost
Asphalt shingles cost considerably less to install. Metal costs more up front, with standing seam at the top of the range. Over the life of the house, metal can work out cheaper if it means never re-roofing again.
Lifespan
Architectural shingles typically last around 20 to 30 years in Ontario. A good metal roof can last 40 to 70 years or more.
Snow and ice
Snow slides off metal, which reduces ice dams and roof load. That's a plus, but it also means snow guards over doors, walks and driveways. Shingles hold snow, so ventilation and ice-and-water shield matter more.
Wind
Both can handle Ontario winds when installed properly. Metal panels are less likely to lift, and shingles do best with high-wind nailing.
Noise
Over solid sheathing and an insulated attic, metal is about as quiet as shingles. Over open framing, like a barn, rain is loud.
Looks
Shingles come in many colours and suit almost any house. Standing seam looks modern or farmhouse. Steel shingles can imitate slate, shake or asphalt.
