Types of metal roof

  • Standing seam. Panels joined with raised seams and hidden fasteners. The premium option, with clean lines and very few places to leak.
  • Exposed fastener (ribbed steel). Panels screwed through the face. Common on barns, sheds and shops. More affordable, but the screw washers need checking over time.
  • Steel shingles and shakes. Pressed to look like asphalt shingles, slate or cedar shake, for a traditional look.

Why people choose metal

  • Lifespan. A good metal roof can last two or three times as long as asphalt shingles.
  • Snow and ice. Snow slides off, which helps with ice dams. Snow guards keep it from dumping on doorways and walks.
  • Wind. Properly fastened panels resist wind well, which matters on exposed rural properties.
  • Weight. Metal is light, so it rarely needs structural work.

The trade-offs

Metal costs more up front than shingles. It can be louder in rain without solid sheathing underneath, and dents from large hail are possible on thinner panels. Compare the options in our guide to metal vs asphalt shingles.

Questions

Is a metal roof noisy in the rain?

Over solid sheathing and an attic, most people find it no louder than shingles. It's on open barns and sheds without sheathing that rain is really noticeable.

Can metal go over my old shingles?

Some systems allow it, but most roofers recommend a tear-off so the deck can be checked and repaired.

Does a metal roof attract lightning?

No. Metal doesn't make a strike more likely, and if one happens it won't burn.

Will snow slide off onto my walkway?

It can. Snow guards along the eaves above doors, walks and driveways hold it in place to melt gradually.
